May 28th Almost Free Five Man
Devious B held their own against Division 1 Xball Team, Devious A fought through a hard division.

With temperatures reaching almost ninety on Sunday, both teams knew they were going to have to fight tough competition along with the weather. Any early arrival saw both squads out walking the field putting together a game plan on the three fields Outdoor Adventures planned to use this weekend. We were fortunate to have enough players to enter two teams in the tourney, and play in different divisions. Which team would make the finals?

Devious B would draw their first game against Ball Breakers a seasoned team who ‘A’ side knew well. Adding three new players to the roster, Mark McClean, Kevin Pilkerton and Matt Callaway, we were hoping to execute a conservative game plan. We played a tight game and ended up with only four points, losing the first match. However, we came off the field with high confidence, knowing we played solid, and needed better communication in the next match.

Devious A played a solid first game coming out with a win. Matt, George, Kyle, Brad and TJ ran a solid game plan with good communication. ‘A’ squad executed a solid break out, moved up field aggressively to get great field position and came out of the first game with a solid win.

In the second round Devious B picked up a well-played win, with Luther getting the flag and a hang. ‘B’ got solid play from Kevin and Matt in the midfield, Kopicko in the snake and McClean in the back. Devious A dropped its second match to a team that would eventually make finals.

Devious B would end the semi-finals with a 3- 3 record losing our last match of the day to a Division 1 Xball team. After fighting a hard match, getting two kills, and losing the match we would get some good news. The team was disqualified for having an illegal roster; Devious B would then get an extra 35 pts, enough to put us into the finals taking 3rd in our division.

Devious A clearly played in the more difficult division out of the two novice divisions. The day proved to be difficult for the team finishing the semi’s with a 3-3 record, and just missing the finals by a few points. Each match was closely contested, and hard fought by the ‘A’ squad. Kyle played with 3rd degree burns on his arm from a recent accident, George, Matt, Brad and TJ played solid all day despite the heat, and show promise for the next tournament.

Devious B faced Ball Breakers again in the first round of the finals, and that was our only win. Facing the top 3 teams from the novice1 bracket would prove difficult. We held our own getting at least 1 kill per game. Mike and Scott would sit out the final games of the day due to injury. Luther and Brad stepped in and finished the day with strong performances in the final game.

Devious B finished 6th overall out of 14 teams.
Devious A finished 4th overall in their division and 8th overall.
